Precious Metals Risk Disclosure
Last updated: August 2026
Price volatility and no guaranteed returns
The prices of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium can be highly volatile and are affected by factors outside any investor's control, including interest rates, currency values, supply and demand, and global events. Metals can lose value, and past performance does not guarantee future results. No one can promise you a profit.
Premiums, spreads, and dealer markups
When you buy physical metals you typically pay a premium above the wholesale "spot" price, and dealers buy back at a lower price than they sell. This bid-ask spread means the metal's market price may need to rise meaningfully before you break even. Proprietary, collectible, or "numismatic" coins can carry especially high premiums and are generally not appropriate for retirement accounts.
Fees and ongoing costs
Precious-metals IRAs involve setup fees, annual custodial fees, and storage fees, which reduce your net return over time. Compare the full fee schedule of any provider before opening an account. Figures shown on this site are typical reported amounts and change frequently.
Liquidity and storage
Physical metals held in an IRA must be stored with an IRS-approved depository; you cannot take personal possession without triggering a taxable distribution. Selling metals may take time and depends on market conditions and your dealer's buyback terms.
Tax and IRA rules
IRAs are subject to IRS rules, including contribution limits, required minimum distributions, and potential taxes and penalties for early or improper withdrawals. Only certain metals meeting purity standards are eligible. These rules can change. Consult a qualified tax professional about your situation.
Not insured; not a bank product
Precious-metals investments are not bank deposits and are not insured by the FDIC, the SIPC, or any government agency. Depository storage insurance, where offered, protects against certain physical losses and is not protection against a decline in market value.
